Breastfeeding and Bottle Feeding
Breastfeed every 1½-3 hours, or 8-12 times in 24 hours.
If bottle feeding, offer a small amount at a time, 2-3 oz.
Feeding Tips
Your baby may get full before finishing a bottle. Watch for hunger and fullness signs.
Feed only breast milk or formula for the first 6 months. Baby’s digestive system isn’t ready for food.

If bottle feeding, offer a small amount at a time, 4-6 oz.
Feeding Tips
During growth spurts, at 2-4 weeks, 6 weeks, 3-4 months and 6 months, your baby may need to eat more often.
Wait until your baby is around 6 months old to introduce baby food. By this age, healthy babies are developmentally ready to eat and swallow foods.

Breastfeed 6 or more times a day.
Bottle-fed babies drink 27-32 oz. a day. Breast milk or formula is still the main source of nutrition.
Foods to Try
First foods should be high in iron and zinc such as baby cereal or puréed meat.
Offer one new food at a time every 3-5 days. Try foods from all food groups: fruits, vegetables, protein and grains.

Puréed (smooth) or mashed food.
Solid Foods Per Day
Start 1-2 Tbsp. per day plain puréed or mashed foods 2 times per day.
Slowly increase the amount based on your baby’s hunger.

Plain foods are best. No need to add salt, sugar, syrup or butter.

Bottle-fed babies drink 27-32 oz. a day. As your baby eats more, they’ll slowly drink less breast milk or formula.
Foods to Try
Mashed soft peeled pieces of fruit and cooked vegetables.
Tiny chopped or mashed pieces of beans, meat, seafood, egg, tofu, shredded cheese or plain yogurt.
Small chopped pieces of noodles, rice, soft tortilla or bread.

Mashed foods with lumps.
About 8 months, try chopped soft finger foods.

Provide 3 meals a day with 1-2 snacks in between.
Feeding Tips
Offer a cup with small amounts of breast milk, formula or water.
Avoid honey, cow’s milk or other non-dairy milks until 1 year of age.
